A strategic step in short sea shipping

Last Monday, Seatrade acquired a 50% stake in JR Shipping. A partnership that fits the strategic course of both parties and responds to the growing role of short sea shipping in Europe.

JR Shipping is active in ship management and the operation of container and short-sea vessels. The fleet consists of 12 container feeder vessels and 11 CTVs within the SeaZip fleet. SeaZip operates within JR Shipping as a specialized branch for offshore service and crew transfer vessels.

For Seatrade, this participation means a broadening towards a segment in which significant investments will be made in the coming years, driven by sustainability, scale and efficiency. CEO Yntze Buitenwerf explains:

"Seatrade has reached a stage of development where it has become interesting to diversify and also invest in other shipping assets. The three segments in which JR Shipping Group operates all appeal to us. The offshore wind support vessel market is relatively new to us, but at the same time very interesting. Short sea dry cargo vessels are already familiar to Seatrade.

Seatrade once started in this segment and still has interests here. Perhaps most appealing to us is the market for high-end feeder vessels. This fits well with our newbuilding portfolio of specialized 1,800 and 2,800 TEU reefer container vessels, which are specifically designed for refrigerated cargo transport.

In the months leading up to this partnership, we greatly appreciated the strong organization and committed employees of JR Shipping Group. We speak the same language and share the same values. We are proud to have become a partner in JR Shipping Group and will actively support the company as a shareholder in the further growth of its fleet and operations."

From strategic exploration to partnership

The process began with a joint exploration of ambitions, market developments and complementarity. Not only the figures, but also future vision, culture and governance played a central role.

"This deal was about more than valuation or structure," says Alexander Beyleveldt, Senior Consultant Corporate Finance.

"We looked together at how this partnership creates long-term value. For both parties it had to be strategically right as well as feasible."

Foundation for further growth

With this participation, Seatrade and JR Shipping are laying a solid foundation for further growth in short sea shipping. A partnership focused on continuity, scalability and future-proofing.
