Assignment

JBR was approached by a tank terminal operator in 2021 to conduct a strategic market study of ports in the Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp (hereinafter the 'ARA region') and the underlying drivers of developments in the relevant market segments.

Background

The client is a leading terminal operator whose mission is to create sustainable, independent liquid bulk storage terminal operations that provide safe and reliable solutions for its customers. The client continuously invests in its terminals to improve operations, optimize the safety and utility of the infrastructure and ensure that the facilities meet the changing needs of its customers. The client operates a terminal in the ARA region and terminals in the Atlantic Basin.

Due in part to the unpredictability of oil prices and the energy transition, the tank terminal market is very dynamic. The recent increase in oil prices (pre-war) has put pressure on storage rates. For internal discussion purposes regarding future activities in the tank terminal market in the ARA region, the client asked JBR and In-Energy to conduct a strategic market study.

Problem Statement

  1. In particular, the client's question focuses on the following topics:
  2. The development/expansion of tank storage capacity in the ARA region
  3. The competitive landscape and activities of competitors in the ARA region
  4. Current and future supply and demand of products and exports to specific regions relevant to the client
  5. Drivers of change in tank storage in ARA region by product type.

Our contribution

Together with inEnergy, JBR consulted and analyzed various sources and expert estimates to provide a thorough assessment of tank storage capacity and providers thereof in the ARA region. Furthermore, using market data, model-based projections of product supply and demand and exports were developed to ultimately outline a short-term outlook for the tank storage market and longer-term opportunities for new energy sources.

The result

Client management used the market study to fuel a discussion with shareholders.
