On March 13, JBR hosted an inspiring event at our Zeist office.

"How do we actually look at the Energy Transition?"
Inspired by Hannah Ritchie's book, Not the end of the world, the topic proved more topical than ever in today's geopolitical landscape, far more relevant than we had originally estimated while preparing for this event.

We were honored to welcome Siebren Zijlstra and Auke Hoekstra as speakers, who captivated the audience with their insights.

The speakers:

Siebren Zijlstra

Siebren is an entrepreneur and investor in the energy transition, with years of sector experience at Tennet, Groenleven and Groendus. As a sector expert, he looks at the energy tranche with a geopolitical perspective and links this to the capital markets perspective. He currently holds several commissioner positions within the sector and teaches at INSEAD.

Auke Hoekstra

Auke is founder of Zenmo and director of the NEON project at TU/e, where he works on a sustainable, bottom-up energy system with flexible solutions such as batteries and electric cars. As project leader of HOLON for the Top Sector Energy, he develops local energy networks (holons) that optimize generation, storage and consumption. His work has also served as inspiration for Hannah Ritchie.

Key insights:

  • Moore's Law: Exponential growth in digital technology will play an increasing role in the energy transition.
  • 'Make Europe great again': The current geopolitical situation poses a threat, but also offers opportunities for Europe, for example in terms of energy independence.
  • Decentralization and batteries: High learning rates rapidly reduce costs, making decentralization, solar and batteries increasingly attractive.
  • Solutions to grid congestion: There are several "simple" solutions to alleviate grid congestion in the short term, requiring only (minor) changes in laws and regulations.

The event began with a welcome coffee, followed by engaging and inspiring presentations from our speakers and a lively Q&A session. We concluded with drinks at the bar and a delicious dinner, where there was room for more personal 1-on-1 conversations.

We would like to sincerely thank all attendees for their involvement and enthusiasm - it made the event unforgettable!
